I moved back to Panama City in March of 2018. I hadn’t gotten out of my car at my friends apt before I saw cats and kittens everywhere! I was told we were not allowed to feed them. Ha! I went to the grocery store next to the apt complex to buy food. I saw MORE cats and kittens EVERYWHERE! One of them was injured. I called Animal Control to help this cat and was told I would be fined if I fed them. And their response to the injured cat “it’s the survival of the fittest. That’s how they weed themselves out”!
Everywhere I went; work, shopping, residential and commercial neighborhoods, they were cats and kittens EVERYWHERE! The number of homeless, abandoned, sick, injured and hungry kittens and cats is of epidemic proportions in Bay County FL.

There was absolutely no way I was going to ignore the plight of these helpless animals. And so, it started. I met 2 people who were just starting out with TNR (trap, neuter, release) and they helped me get the cats spayed, neutered and vaccinated. But that wasn’t enough. What about after? They needed consistent feeding, shelter, monitoring for sickness and injury and LOVE!

I started making shelters out of Styrofoam coolers that I trashed picked from pet store dumpsters and wood I trashed picked from work. I was a “one woman show” helping and saving cats and kittens. I founded my nonprofit, Street Cat Society (DBA of Cat Covers food and Love Inc.) in Feb 2019.

I had to operate “under cover” because what I am doing is taboo in Bay County, FL. But soon, the property owners and business managers saw what a huge difference I was making. No more kittens and cats in dumpsters looking for food, hanging out in parking lots begging for food. Soon, they didn’t even see the cats. I earned their trust and cooperation to continue to work to help the cats.

I still had a big problem. No one knew about me- I couldn’t “advertise” because of the laws. I didn’t have any funding, grants or benefactors. I had to support my mission by myself, financially and physically. The first year I spent $24,000 of my own money. The costs have greatly increased over the next 6 years and my resources depleted.
I have had numerous warnings and one fine of $65.00. I don’t care how many times I get fined or told I can’t do it. I WILL NEVER GIVE UP! One person CAN make a difference!

It doesn’t have to be on the scale I do, but helping just one cat DOES matter!
